Birds’ beaks will look like they have layers to them. They pretty much do have layers. They blend into one but there are transition periods where it looks like the beak may be separating. This is more than likely normal. Granted it could be something like an infection or an injury but most of the time its just fine. Its similar to a fingernail of feather molt. It grows slowly and it sheds the old to make room for the new but its more like a fingernail that needs trimming instead of cutting. Birds usually are able to maintain it themselves. Especially if you have calcium blocks and cuttlebone out for them. This is also where having that one sand perch comes in.

However, like a fingernail or skin or cartilage like that of an ear or nose, if the tissue is damaged past a certain point, the best you may get is scar tissue. If you’ve ever seen a boxer’s cauliflower ear you know what I’m talking about. There was a horrid story a few years ago where some kids hit a wild toucan with a stick and he lost half his upper beak. He can’t eat regular toucan food without full use of his beak and has to be fed a special diet otherwise he’ll die. I did read where a doctor or engineer mad him a prosthetic beaky and a surgeon connected it. Its better than nothing but accidents can happen just as much as malicious acts.

If you have any doubts contact a vet and ask where you can text or email a picture of the beak. I’d wager most avian vets would at least take a look. If its nothing it takes them 5 seconds. If it is something to worry about then they can help the bird AND help make their car payment.
