Yo Adrian… Our birds are fully flighted. Every room in the house has some place that the bird can land (aside from our shoulders, of course) and sit/perch/play to be near us while we’re taking care of human things. Watching TV, being on the computer, eating, even doing dishes in another room (or the bathroom). They know what places they can be and where they can’t be. It took a while but we now can leave them to their own devices or be by us if they so choose. I built them a jungle gym on the living room coffee table. That whole table is theirs minus our drinking cups. They have a jungle gym with seed treats, nut treats, fruit treats etc as well as an apparatus that holds val-u-pak papers for chewing, and a water dispenser. I converted an old hummingbird feeder into a water dispenser, kind of like a baby chicken water dispenser. I fill the various cups with treats and they forage for some and just dig in on others. I also took a cat toy ball with lengthwise slits and a bell in the middle and cut one end slit. I removed the bell and now I fill them with treat balls or treat bricks. Birds love to forage and it keeps them from getting bored.

Fighting boredom is important because if they get bored or anxious then they may start plucking and mutilating. If this starts it is very hard to fight and will lots of times continue throughout their life. I also put a $2 plastic turkey serving tray (concave) on the table and that is where the treat ball and other toy balls go. This way they can move the ball around a large area and the ball doesn’t fall on the floor. I also have long dowel in front of the curtain rod so they can be high up yet not on the curtain. (its easy to vacuum up dried poop from the carpet where no one walks then it is to clean poop off of curtains.) I have a piece of plywood (that can be covered with newspaper) with a plank coming up out of it about 3 feet high and another dowel coming out of the plank (like the hangman letter game gallows) to which they can sit on and I also attached a swing so if I’m sitting in that chair next to the couch they can be by me if they don’t want to be on my shoulder. In my computer room my computer sits right next to the door.

I took a pre-made play pen/jungle gym and hung it from the door via door hangers and slats. I have a rope going all the way to the ground so that babies who’s wings have been clipped can climb up to the “fort” and play, eat seeds or glide to my shoulder. But they can be by me if they want while I’m working. In my wife’s room we have a baking sheet on a table and a bendable ladder in the shape of a bridge on the baking sheet that’s covered in paper. That way they can be by her if they want and we only have to toss the paper to clean it up. They now fly to each spot at their leisure so their time out of the cage is time spent the way they want it instead of the way we want it. When you take a vacation, it’s more fun when you get to do what YOU want than when you have to do what someone else wants? Birds are no different.
