I can’t stress this enough. Take off your shoes if you live in cold climates. If a bird gets a hold of a piece of rock salt they’re pretty much dead. Every creature loves salt and even sweets. That’s why dogs will drink antifreeze because it tastes sweet. The bird will taste salt and not realize that it’s the type of salt that will kill them.

Be mindful of their claws. Sometimes they will be attached to your shirt or the couch or a towel and their claw will be stuck and you won’t even know it. Even if you’re next to their cage and they decide to walk from your shoulder to the cage be careful. Bird claws are designed to close onto things with minimal force. This keeps them on the branch without expending a lot of energy. If their claw is stuck in your shirt and you walk away thinking they’ve got one foot on the cage so they’re good… bad news. Always check for stuck claws. You can help by keeping claws trimmed and not sharp. This also prevents them from getting stuck on things like the couch or a towel especially when they’re in their cage and you’re either asleep, at work or gone, especially on long trips. We’ve had it happen where we’re lucky we were there. Birds can usually unstick themselves but sometimes they get stuck. Beaks are the same way. Make sure that they’re not grabbed onto something like the side of the cage before you start pulling. You can easily rip their head off. They’re hook bill is long and hooked which  means that in order to detach they have to either pull their head back or up a considerable ways.
